Government has assured the nation that it has enough maize stocks for communities to access the commodity in the 84 districts that have been affected by the drought.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture in charge of Administration YVONNE MPUNDU says the government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has positioned adequate stocks of maize in all its depots across the country to enable vulnerable communities access the commodity.
Ms. MPUNDU says the government is committed to ensure that no one dies of hunger as there is enough maize stock for everyone to benefit under the maize redistribution exercise.

She says the FRA will continue to replenish the stocks should they be depleted and has assured the nation that the community sales programme which started last month is running in a transparent and smooth manner.

Ms. MPUNDU said this at Malengo satellite depot in Chirundu district during the inspection of the maize redistribution exercise in Chirundu and Kafue districts.

Meanwhile FRA Food Reserve and Marketing Manager JUSTINE CHUUNKA says the agency will open up more satellite depots to enable communities access the maize near their area.

Mr. CHUUNKA has also disclosed that the agency will also beef up its staff in areas where there are challenges of manpower so that the community maize sales programme runs more efficiently and covers everyone.

And Chirundu district Commissioner PATRICK KASAMBILA has commended the government for averting a hunger situation in the district.

Mr. KASAMBILA says so far FOUR THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED bags of maize have been distributed to all the 12 wards under the maize redistribution exercise that commenced last month.
