Government has reaffirmed its commitment to support farmers. 21-October-2019

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to address challenges faced by farmers in the agriculture sector through various interventions.
Agriculture Permanent Secretary SONGOWAYO ZYAMBO says his Ministry and the Ministry of Fisheries and livestock are developing and integrating various information systems that will help improve agriculture production and trade.
Mr. ZYAMBO said Zambia is unable to access international market due to low yields caused by trans-boundary plant and animal pests and diseases hence the need for more mitigation measures.
Mr. ZYAMBO observed the need to develop early warning system such as weather systems in order to assist farmers respond to risks of climate change.
He says government has put in place measures such as promotion of Conservation Agriculture and drought resistant crop varieties as well as development of irrigation schemes to help the sector thrive.
Mr. ZYAMBO said this in a speech read for him by Director for Policy and Planning JOHN KALUMBI during the official opening of the planning workshop of Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Regional Agricultural Policy (RAP) project in Lusaka.
And Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Deputy Country Representative GEOFREY CHOMBA has pledged the organisation’s commitment to partner with government in addressing challenges faced in the agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock sectors
