Community Dam-Lumwana Barrick

Government in partnership with Barrick Lumwana Mine is constructing a K5.5 Million community dam in Kimilombe area Lumwana East in Kalumbila district which will provide an alternative source of water supply for agricultural purposes.

 

Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary Bishop Edward Chomba said the community dam would be constructed across the Kimilombe stream and will have a storage capacity of 250, 000 cubic meters.

 Bishop Chomba said the dam was an intiative of Barrick Lumwana mine in partnership with the Ministry of Water Development Sanitation and Enviromental Protection.

He said this during the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the dam in Kalumbila district and added that it was important that dams were constructed every where in Zambia and make good quality water be available and accessible for both domestic and agricultural use.

 The Permanent Secretary said it was the Ministrys desire to establish drought and flood warning systems and; promote water harvesting infrastructure through the construction of water dams in both rural and urban areas for the country to always have water.

 He was hopeful that the works would be done on schedule and that no one would interfere with the works. He further encouraged the people of Kalumbila District to adopt intergrated approach to development for the Vission 2030 to be attained.

 Speaking at the same event, Barrick Lumwana Mine General Manager Sam Ash said the constuction of the dam was to provide an alternative source for  the local fish farming, convntional farming and animal rearing.

Mr.Ash said it was Lumwana’s belief was that the construction of the dam would greatly enhance the community’s ability to venture into different  types of activities that will improve the economy.

 And Avantech General Manager Joseph Kaira assured the local community that the ground breaking was the begining of  works and  would be completed within the scheduled period.
