SME’s urged to harmonize COMESA standards

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has urged Small and Medium-Enterprises (SMEs) and co-operatives to take Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) harmonized standards in their businesses seriously.


Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chief Economist Boniface Kunda said harmonizing COMESA standards in their various businesses will help improve their economic status in the province.

Mr Kunda said this when he officiated at the launch of the sensitization seminar on COMESA harmonized standards for North Western province in Solwezi.

He added that the seminar was aimed at creating awareness on COMESA harmonized standards because standards play a very important role in the growth of our businesses.

“This important event is aimed at creating awareness on COMESA Harmonized Standards. Standards prescribe requirements for goods and services that businesses need to use if their businesses have to grow,’’ said Mr.Kunda.

He observed that the setting up of Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) offices in provincial centres will help to address challenges facing various business individuals and institutions in implementing the harmonized COMESA standards in their businesses.

“The provision of provincial centres is part of Governments’ policy to decentralize its services closer to the public. The Ministry is calling on all business houses to make use of ZABS offices in order to improve the quality of goods and services so that they are competitive not only locally but also in the regions,’’ echoed the Chief Economist.

And speaking during the presentation, ZABS Senior Standards Officer Dingiswayo Shawa said there is low awareness on comesa harmonized standards among business houses hence the aim of the training to educate various stakeholders on the importance of these standards.

And one of the participants Bonnard Fumpa from mutanda appreciated the Ministry for the training received in harmonizing COMESA standards in their business.

Mr.Fumpa assured ZABS of their commitment in implementing and adhering to the acquired COMESA standards.
