Government says it will not compromise on the quality of Cashew Seedlings produced under the Cashew Infrastructure Development Project in Western Province.
This is in the wake of some farmers who grow cashew seedlings with the view to supply to the project without being contracted, which is against the project guidelines.
Agriculture Minister MICHAEL KATAMBO says the success of the Cashew project depends on the good quality seedlings that will enable farmers to produce good quality cashew nuts for the market.
Mr. KATAMBO says it is good that the association has accepted their mistake to produce seedlings without following the project guidelines.
Mr. KATAMBO was speaking after having a meeting with the Cashew Association Representatives at the Provincial Minister’s Office in Mongu.
And Western Province Minister RICHARD KAPITA says government will not allow the project to procure seedlings grown anyhow without any control and monitoring by the project experts, as it against the guidelines.
Mr KAPITA says it is a pity that some farmers decided to produce cashew seedlings without being contracted by the project.
And in an interview after the meeting Cashew Association of Zambia Representative ERNEST MWANAMONGA accept that it was a mistake on their part produce without following the guidelines.
He says going forward, the association will work closely with the project experts to ensure that the right thing is done.
